Pressing keys by voice

The built-in "press" command — key names, modifiers, repeats and sequences, with no setup required.

press is built in — there is nothing to configure, and it is why press is a reserved word you cannot use in your own command phrases.

What you can name

  • Letters a–z and digits, spoken as words
  • enter or return, tab, escape, space, backspace, delete
  • Arrow keys, home, end key, page up, page down
  • Function keys — "f five" for F5
  • plus, minus, equals

Say "end key" rather than "end" — bare "end" is too easily confused with the letter N.

Modifiers

Prefix the key with any of control (or ctrl), shift, alt (or option), and command (or cmd, super, meta).

Repeats and sequences

  • Repeat — "press double tab", "press triple enter", or "press tab three times" (up to ten)
  • Sequence — two or more bare keys in order: "press enter tab" presses each in turn

Tacking it onto a finish phrase

You can end a dictation and press a key in one breath: "thank you Annika press enter" injects your text and then presses Enter. Handy for chat applications.
